Adopt practical measures to combat climate change and build climate and energy resilience

Labour in North Somerset will:

  • Implement a local flood risk management strategy working with the community and other agencies to develop a flood resilience approach to mitigate the impact of future flooding incidents.
  • Work with local businesses and further education providers to build the skills to insulate local housing and reduce fuel poverty.
  • Work with business, universities, farming and forestry to promote North Somerset as a leading sustainable economy facing the challenges and opportunities of climate change.
  • Promote community-owned energy generation, using solar and wind as permitted and maximising solar/battery installation on existing larger business and community roofs.
  • Fight for every new-build, whether residential, commercial or community, to be at least zero-carbon and preferably an energy-generating asset, contributing to climate and energy resilience.
  • Support people in understanding their carbon footprint and how to reduce it in order to save money and deliver positive action on climate change. We will work with initiatives around food waste and food poverty such as the Fridge of Free Stuff, food clubs and community larders.
  • Encourage more walking and cycling by providing safer streets for everyone.
  • Campaign to stop sewage being discharged into rivers, waterways and beaches.
