North Somerset Labour launches local elections manifesto
The Labour Party’s manifesto for May’s North Somerset local elections has been launched and outlines the key policies its councillors will fight for if elected.
‘Labour on your side’ proposes a fairer, greener future for all and sets out eight priorities for action:
- Decent and safe housing for all
- A public transport service that works for North Somerset
- High standards, compassion and dignity in adult social care
- Good local facilities for children and their parents
- Safe and secure neighbourhoods and communities
- Climate and energy resilience
- Better jobs and better work
- Healthcare that will work for our residents
Labour councillor Richard Westwood, standing for re-election in Clevedon Yeo, said:
“Across North Somerset, Labour has worked together to produce a positive manifesto that all our candidates will campaign on. We know how soaring inflation and massive increases in housing costs and energy bills are hitting families and damaging our communities. Our manifesto sets out practical proposals to tackle these issues, to improve lives and to build a better future for the area.
The Tories have put Liam Fox MP front and centre of their campaign and yet he has voted for double digit percentage cuts in local government budgets four times since 2010. In the face of this persistent austerity North Somerset Council has had to make over £70 million in savings since 2013 affecting crucial local services that people rely on.
We all know someone affected by the crisis in recruitment and retention of care workers locally. This has such a devastating impact on the services supporting local residents with physical and learning disabilities, as well as the care needs of our oldest neighbours and family members.
When local people were trying to look after each other, Conservative politicians were looking after themselves. Now important local elections are taking place and Labour is firmly on your side.
Please make sure you vote and consider registering for a postal vote so there are no worries about remembering to bring photo ID to the polling station. We would also welcome volunteers to support Labour’s campaign to elect more councillors in May.”
